That's a wrap! Session 5 done and dusted
There we have it, the Multiply Course group met for the final of their 5 sessions on Tuesday 19th March, up at High Ashurst with Surrey Outdoor Learning and Development.
Pro Active Community members Robert, Michael and Matthew joined Active Prospects UK who have supported 9 adults with learning disability, or autistic people with different learning styles and needs, to attend with support staff to learn in an outdoor environment through skills based activities, all with a numeracy focus.
Celebrating on Tuesday, everyone reviewed what activities and challenges they have taken part in, from archery and orienteering, to fire building and code breaking. No two weeks have been the same but all cleverly intertwined to ensure embedded learning and a chance to put skills learned into practice, together.
A really well developed team spirit was evident from the end of the first week which has been an additional benefit of bringing so many different home locations to one learning place.
“I’ve not met some of the people here before and I will meet them again even though it’s finished, I like that”
“Can I keep the popcorn maker we’ve made to use at the allotment firepit?”
“My favourite part was the blindfolded leading, that was a good test of trust”
“I’ve never built a fire and cooked on it - or even tasted a marsh mallow”
Huge thanks go especially to Ben and Debbie at SOLD, but acknowledgement must also go to the support teams from the Active Prospects UK homes who ensured seamless support for everyone to attend, often changing their rota or leave so continuity was achieved.
All who took part celebrated with preparing and cooking fantastic open fire pancakes, fresh fruit and popcorn (ok and a few toasted marsh mallows) a lot of energy used in gathering all the wood after all!!
By taking part in this course, ideas, shaping and feedback from all the participants will help develop this course for future adult groups, a very collaborative approach as well as a co-productive one, to ensure this style of course is suitable, beneficial and has the anticipated outcomes as well as the aimed for impact.
What a great start to the year, thank you to everyone who took part.
