Advocacy and me
Wow - what a fantastic Pro-Active Community meeting as the first one hosted in June, with guest speaker Nick Kinsella from Active Prospects talking about the Advocacy Project he is managing.
Members shared frustrations about not always feeling they have power or control over their own decisions or choices. Not being heard, not being listened to.
Michael said how important pictures are for him to understand documents or words - a great example of self advocacy, swiftly followed by a Emma Jane pointing out he has dyslexia so needs reasonable adjustments to feel included. Her advocating on his behalf was such a powerful and natural action to demonstrate this project is much needed.
Empowering, upskilling and providing a trusted safe space for supported adults with learning disability to feel able to speak up about issues important to their lives, is vital.

Delighted to share with the support of Dexter James from Surrey Choices, there are now 12 taxi firms who have signed up to the Disability Charter, having someone else dedicated to this project has been such a boost!
